What’s Your Next Most Effective Step?

Hello Fabulous Women!

We often talk about “next steps” in our businesses.  There is always that next thing to do!  Yet how often do we do the next step, and then the next, and the next, and still not appear to get much closer to our biggest goals?

As women in business, we all seem to have so many roles to play that it is all too easy to get caught up in the details, this step and that step, and somehow not get to those steps that will truly move us forward.

So today I challenge you (and myself!) to step back for a moment and ask, “What is my next most effective step?”

What do I mean by most effective?  Well, that is going to vary for all of us.  Sometimes the most effective step is obvious and sometimes it’s not!  If it’s just leaping out at you already, just because I asked, then for Heaven’s sake just go and do it!  If not, then here are some great questions to ask yourself to help you see what step or steps you could take today that will make a difference.

  • What step have I been putting off, because it seemed too hard or too complicated?
  • What step, however big or small, has been lingering undone for months now?
  • What undone thing is draining my mental energy every time I see it or think of it?
  • What area of my business (or life) have I been wanting to not even look at because of something undone, undecided, unclear?

Got one?  (Or two, or three?  I’ve got four already, myself, just from writing this!)

Pick one.  You may be surprised at what you pick.  You may think you should be working on your marketing but realizing that what’s really draining you is the bathroom you never quite finished painting six months ago.  And really, how long would it take to finish it vs. how much time you’ve spent putting it off and how much energy you lose every time you look at it?  So go pick up the paint brush or call someone to finish it already!

Realize that sometimes the “most effective” step to take is a small thing that has been in the background, dragging you down, decreasing your effectiveness all over the place without you realizing it.

On the other hand, if the thing you picked is a “big” thing, you may still be stopped by feeling that it’s too hard, too complicated, and you just don’t know where to start.  In that case, you need to break it down and identify one small step to get yourself started.  Don’t buy that “I don’t know what to do” that your mind is trying to sell you.  There is always at least one small step you can take if you look for it!

Enough said — whether you choose something that seems big or small, just go do it.  Today. Now.  I am!

Making Goals Real

Hello Fabulous Women!

2010 is more than half over.  I don’t know about you, but I find that extraordinary and more than a little unsettling!

Unsettling can be good, though – when we are uncomfortable, unsettled, jarred out of our usual routine, there’s an opportunity to make things happen, to take a leap forward in our lives.  Growth doesn’t come from complacency, it only comes from stretching and moving out of our comfort zones, including the discomfort and even pain of realizing we have not yet achieved our goals.

Whether or not you created goals for yourself and your business at the beginning of this year, this is a fine time to create some goals for what you want to accomplish by the end of 2010.  Why?  Because there’s no time like the present, of course!

For myself, here are 3 goals I have created that I am committed to achieving before the end of this year:

1) Increase my income by 50% over last year

2) Complete professional training I need for a coaching position I want with a cutting edge business growth company

3) Resolve and heal chronic pain and tightness in my neck and shoulders, through treatment and exercise and changes in habit

What about you?

Ladies, I invite you now to create three or more goals for yourself, and after creating the goals, take on these steps to keep you moving powerfully toward fulfilling them.

For each goal, write down:

1) By when you will achieve it (Example: by the end of November)

2) What action steps you will need to take to make it happen, from little baby steps to larger ones (Example: figure out what results I need to achieve each week to meet my income goal, make appointment with chiropractor to work on my neck)

3) What will it feel like when you achieve this goal – be specific (Ex: meeting my income goal will feel exhilarating and freeing, I will feel very proud of myself and know that I can achieve even more next year.  Relieving chronic pain in my neck will be, quite literally, like a huge weight off my shoulders!)

4) What does it/will it feel like to not achieve this goal – be specific (Example: I feel pressured to be producing more income, worried that we won’t have enough money for college for our daughters, etc)

5) What limiting belief(s) do you have that are not supporting you in this goal?  (Example: I don’t have the discipline to do that, it doesn’t matter that much, this is good enough for now)

6) What empowering beliefs do you have that fully support you in achieving this goal? (Example:  I truly enjoy connecting with people and making a profound difference in their lives, and I’m very good at it, I have the training and skills I need to achieve what I want)

By going through the steps above with each goal, you transform the goal from a wish to a compelling action plan, one that pulls you forward and gives you the support you need to push through when circumstances are difficult.  No matter what your goal, chances are there will be times when it is “not going your way.” Without clarity on your next steps, your reasons for why you want it, and the beliefs you have that hinder or help you, those are the times when we stop and sometimes never get started again.

Make the rest of this year amazing.  Get started now!

The Law of Diminishing Intention

Hello Fabulous Women!

Are you familiar with the Law of Diminishing Intentions (LODI)?  You may not know it by that name, but I’m sure you, like myself, have been intimately familiar with it.  This law states that, in the absence of action, the determination and commitment one has to accomplish something diminishes over time.  Put another way, the longer you put off doing something, the less likely you are to ever do it.

If you have noticed that you have not received a blog post/newsletter from me in some time, you will understand that this is a case in point, where I have allowed the LODI to operate quite freely and decisively!  Where I used to post once or twice a week, I actually have not written one new thing since early March.   Eeeeuuw, I hate admitting that.

It is true that I have been extremely busy, and with some great things that are moving me forward toward some of my most important goals – more on that later. 

Because what is also true, and what I want to address now, is that I intended to keep blogging throughout this time, but didn’t do it. 

Now if I had made a decision back in March to take an official hiatus from writing, that would have been in integrity.  Instead, I just kept intending to get started again, but as each week went by, it seemed harder and harder to get started again, my determination and commitment were less and less strong, and I took no action.  Week after week, saying “I really need to start writing again,” and week and after week of taking no action at all, letting my excuses run the show.

Does this sound familiar at all?

So why am I writing now?  What has changed? 

The fact is, the only thing that changed is that today, when I had that same thought, I walked over to my computer, opened up a document, and started typing.

That’s it.  No huge epiphany, no burning message I suddenly had to share.  No blaze of brilliance.

You see, there is one thing and one thing only that can break the grip of the Law of Diminishing Intentions.  And that thing is action.  It doesn’t have to be inspired action, and it certainly doesn’t have to come from some deep understanding of why you haven’t been in action before.  Action alone is what it takes, and without action, no amount of understanding or insight will amount to a hill of beans.

So, ladies, I’m back, and if you are still willing to listen, here is my challenge for you all.  If there is any area in your life where you can see the Law of Diminishing Intentions operating, I challenge you to take action today, right now.  Whether it be in your business, your home, your health, your family – any area at all where your intentions have been sliding down that slippery slope to nothingness, take action today.  Big action, small action, doesn’t matter, just move forward in some way, and break that Law of Diminishing Intentions, stop it in its tracks.

I promise you, you will be glad you did.

Growing Your Business Means Growing Yourself

Hello Fabulous Women!

An enormous part of creating and growing a business is just plain hard work and dogged determination, but there is that “blossoming” part as well.  And while blossoming sounds pretty and poetic, the fact of the matter is, Anais Nin was absolutely right about it being painful and frightening while it’s happening.

To create a new business or take an existing one to the next level takes ongoing growth and development on the part of the owner, the learning of new skills and new ways to view things.  It takes a willingness to risk not only your hard work and your money, but also to risk giving up your own view of yourself, your “identity,” in order to allow yourself to become something bigger.

What I mean by that is that we have all created an image of ourselves for ourselves – we think that we “are” this kind of person or that kind of person.  And whether your overall view of yourself is fairly positive or fairly negative, one thing that it always is is limiting.  This is one of the areas where business coaching is extremely valuable, as it is not always easy to see all the ways where our own view is limiting us.

For example, you may think of yourself as highly self-sufficient and competent, and that is great in many ways, but I guarantee it will limit the way you listen to others and the degree to which you are willing to let others contribute anything to you.

For someone like that (not that I know any one like that at all, no, not me!), if you are not willing to let go of this view of yourself and learn the skills of working with a team, your business will hit a brick wall every time you exhaust your own personal resources.  There is only so much time in the day for any one person.  If you are a one woman army, at the end of the day, if you didn’t do it, then it didn’t get done.  Period.  And the same thing will happen the next day.

If you are willing to give up that view of yourself, and begin to develop your ability to create teams of people, believe that others can do the job and help you, then the possibilities for what you can accomplish begin to expand exponentially.

The issue with many entrepreneurial people is exactly this – we are self-sufficient, self-starting, competent people.  And we have a hard time believing anyone else can do it as well as we can.  And it’s just really hard for us to give up that view of ourselves, because that belief in our own capabilities has made us strong and is what has taken us this far. 

So it’s hard to believe that it is now what’s in the way.

But it is.

So my challenge for you all today is to look and see where you have been holding onto an outdated view of yourself, and where does that show up in your life and your business?  I guarantee you that there is at least one place where your own belief about who you are is hamstringing you and keeping you from the success you want. 

Decide that it’s time to break out of the bud.  You have no idea how big and beautiful that blossom can be, you just have to trust you’ll survive the process and decide to GROW.

Job One Is Always The Same

Job One is always the same. That’s right, Job One – meaning your first, most important job at any given time – is always the same.

That may sound like crazy talk to you – I mean, doesn’t it make sense that Job One will keep changing as you get things accomplished and as new problems and challenges arise?

One day Job One is preparing for a particular meeting or presentation, another day Job One is handling communications breakdowns, another day it’s making time to write or create, and let’s face it, some days Job One is taking care of a sick kid or taking the dog to the vet.

Isn’t managing your time and effectiveness all about being able to prioritize and decide what Job One is on any given day and then doing it? And so forth for Job Two, Job Three, etc., of course.

Well, I’d like to suggest another approach, and one that will revolutionize your life, both in and out of your business.

This approach is deciding that Job One is always the same thing. Do you know what it is?

It’s you. More specifically, it’s your energy. Job One is raising and maintaining your own energy, keeping yourself strong and well, so that you can be focused and effective and brilliant while taking on Jobs Two, Three, Four, and so on.

It’s very simple. When your energy is high you can bring your best to every task you take on. When your energy is low, you can’t.

When I started to apply this to my life, I noticed a remarkable thing. If I take the time to attend to my own energy first, I always get far more done, and done better, than if I just reactively jump into the job that’s demanding my attention.

It takes some discipline to apply this idea. Sometimes shifting your energy is easy, and sometimes it’s not.

Sometimes you really have to step back from that problem that needs your attention, and instead go for a walk outside, or do some stretching, or go get a drink of water and rehydrate yourself. You might need to stop and write down what’s on your mind that’s dragging your energy down, so you can deal with it, or call someone you can connect to who can help you get clear and focused. You also need to spend some time proactively finding out ways to keep your energy high, ways that work for you, and then use them when your energy is low. (Stretching is one that always makes a difference for me.)

The most successful and effective and transformational people in the world are people who know this and apply it in their lives moment by moment, every day. And because they keep their own energy levels high, they are not only effective and efficient themselves, they are also attractive and charismatic. They are people you want to be around, people who others want to be connected to and working with. They are people who make amazing things happen.

I invite you to take on the Job One Challenge with me. Commit to making your own energy level Job One for the next month, and see the difference it makes in how you handle all those other “jobs” that life will throw at you. Let me know what happens!

Beyond Satisfied – from Customer to Fan

Hello Fabulous Women!

I’m back from my holiday blogging hiatus and ready to take on this new year!  How about you? 

Here’s a great way to reconnect and get started — a terrific video from that Name Tag Guy, Scott Ginsberg.  As you all probably know by now, as a women’s business coach I am a huge fan of Scott’s.  I don’t know if there’s anyone out there who has more rich, entertaining and extremely useful information for entrepreneurs and business people – the guy is brilliant!  And funny, which makes a big difference, and makes his ideas and insights easy to use and apply to your business right away.

You want satisfied customers, right?  How about customers that are way beyond satisfied, customers who are so in love with you and your company that they are fans, they are downright addicted to your business? 

That is certainly not the norm in business, but it’s also far from being impossible.  If you think about it, you can all probably think of at least one example from your own life.  Think of a time when you have been so over-the-top happy with your experience as a customer that you have gone from being simply a customer to being a fan.  Whether it’s a restaurant, a hair stylist, a butcher, a landscaper – they are so great that you recommend that company to everybody.
